Movie Review: Chef (2014)

chef

Plot:A head chef quits his restaurant job and buys a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.

I would never have specifically chosen to watch this film by myself, and yet Zoë really liked it. I knew if she liked something like this (and it usually isn’t the type of film she’d go for), I would likely enjoy it too.

Chef3

Jon Favreau is perhaps best known for his role as Happy in the Iron Man franchise, but we all know him to be an excellent director too. He takes on the main character role of the Chef Carl Casper (love the alliteration right there), a brilliant chef who is forced into a mundane existence by working in an upmarket restaurant with a close-minded owner (played by Dustin Hoffman). After being blasted terribly by a Food Blogger, Carl loses his shit, goes on a Twitter rampage and eventually just quits. His ex-wife, Inez (Sofia Vergara), convinces him to take up a food truck because then he can actually be true to himself and cook what he wants.

Chef1

Beware, Chef is food porn. You need to be prepared for the visual stimulation that will besiege you and I would not suggest watching this on an empty stomach. The amount of goodwill towards good food is staggering, and I was salivating even after I already had a delicious meal earlier.

Chef2

Primarily Chef is what happens when a man loses his passion. It is a lesson on social media etiquette, being a good parent, finding solutions and loving what you do how a man that lost his passion gets back on his feet, and his relationship with his wife and child are incorporated into that.  It is a feel good film . I wish all divorced couples would get along so well. Inez and Carl are the ideal divorced pair. They both care about their childs’ happiness and work towards keeping him grounded. I also enjoyed seeing Sofia Vergara in such a role, she is too often only cast as a hot Latino mammy and while she does good at it, she has so much more to give than her typecast work. I also enjoyed Bobby Cannavale and John Leguizamo in their roles, as well as Scarlett Johannson who was just a normal character. Robert Downey Jnr. Quickly makes an appearance too, which tells me a number of the Avengers cast wanted to support their friend and that is just great.

I actually have nothing bad to say about this. Chef is a joyful film with humor and self-discovery, and while it really is very optimistic it is lovely to watch. Definitely worth it!

#100HappyDays: Day 93 – 100.. DONE!!

frodo-its-done

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!

I MADE IT THROUGH THIS CHALLENGE!

I didn’t think I would, really I didn’t. I have this… ability… to not finish things. And some days are just so crap that it feels so inauthentic to post a picture about what makes you happy. However, it was a really nice challenge and it does teach you to see something good in the day. Here are my last few days.. hope you enjoy!

93

Day 93:

We are having regional elections this year in South-Africa. I don’t think we’ve ever needed an election more. This country’s parliament is in shambles, and I think that we are in a dangerous place right now. The past weekend we all went to check that we are indeed registered to vote – because it really is true that if you don’t vote you can’t complain. (Note: America, please don’t make Trump your President)

94

Day 94:

Reading my favorite series with my favorite soft drink (Coke Light has replaced its evil older brother in my life), and it was a great night.

95

Day 95:

A wild moment of determination, and I am a member of a gym again! SO PROUD!

96

Day 96:

I think this is my favorite pic I’ve taken in this challenge. The food was delicious too.

97

Day 97:

Going to the gym is really exhausting right now. Wait, I think that is a good thing.

98

Day 98:

I contradicted an entire week of healthy eating by this meal, but it was so nice. It seems kind of illegal to post pics like these currently. Anyway, it was delicious.

#100HappyDays: Days 63 – 68

Happy Monday everyone! This challenge is heading along nice, even with all my numbering faults. (I managed to have day 63 twice this week, which makes no sense, but I think I may have skipped a day somewhere – sure I did – so it will balance out!)

631

Day 63 (1):

Love my eldest sister!

63

Day 63 (2):

I watched Shakespeare in Love for the first time all the way through and crocheted on a top secret project. I do hope the recipient of this project loves it when it is finished!

64

Day 64:

There are some things in this world that makes me ridiculously happy. Two of them are: Free things and Loyalty cards. Our – amazing – canteen at work has a loyalty based point system and I got a delicious meal out of it last week!

65

Day 65:

To say that the past week was hectic and full of stress is the understatement of the year. However, I somehow pulled through in one piece, and my managers thought I was amazing. It is a really good feeling to finally work in a place where recognition occurs.

66

Day 66:

Yep, more food. This chicken wrap was divine!

67

Day 67:

We spent Saturday with some friends that we’ve known for ages, and it was a lovely experience. It is the best feeling to just completely be yourself, because everyone at an event knows you from when you were in your primary school clothes.

68

Day 68:

Instead of resting AS ONE SHOULD on a Sunday, I finally took the time to super clean my room. Things were moved, repacked, thrown out, cleaned, new bedding was put up and curtains were hanged. I am SO happy with the results!

What made you happy this week?

#100HappyDays: Days 57 – 62

Happy Monday, folks!

I am back with another update. Today, spot the mistake! 😀

57

Day 57:

When the challenge gets tough, take a picture of your food. This was delicious though!

58

Day 58:

I’m such a fan of this nude Iced Mocha color from Revlon. Definitely one of my favorite colors!

60

Day 60:

Our office has a coffee maker that makes the most delicious and strong cappuchino. There are very little that I find more offensive than weak flavored coffee, so this cancels out the negative day-to-day feels impressively!

61

Day 61:

Love the scarf I got on a sale here in Johannesburg!

62

Day 62:

I’ve mentioned before that it is weddings everywhere for the next month, and Saturday was the first one. It was so lovely and fun. Happiness is so contagious, don’t you think?

What made you happy this week?

Wednesday thoughts

It is Wednesday right? I woke up this morning thinking it is Friday. How depressing to discover the truth. In all honesty, I had good reason to be confused. Who thinks straight at 6 in the morning with sub-zero temperatures? Word of advice to tourists around the world: NEVER come to South-Africa in the winter expecting warm weather. You would be so sad to discover the truth. It is freeze-your-ass-off-cold right now. My claim of “loving winter” is under severe strain while I ingest numerous sources of caffeine to jump start my brain.

Last night I finally decided to bring out my heater to heat up the freezer that is impersonating my room, only to discover it didn’t work. Sadly, I put it away, but discovered later on that I had accidentally turned off my plug in the last week – A really intelligent moment. I can only justify it by expressing how busy I had been during the day – it was the craziest in a while.

The dieting is going really well, partly because I am too busy during the day to eat any junk. I have impressed myself with my exercise routine lately. Even yesterday, when I felt I had run a marathon during the day, I managed to get my but on my bike and do a full 60 minutes. I am currently in that phase where exercise is fun, and I really enjoy the satisfaction of knowing I am improving myself afterwards.

The book I am currently reading is not compelling me at the moment. It is very good, from one of my top five authors, but it just feels less impressive than her previous books.

I started on Season three of Supernatural. That season really started off with a bang. The second episode, which I watched last night, nearly made me throw my tablet across the room (again). Man, that show taught me never to trust children. They are creepy.

Anyhow, here is some inspiration for today. I hope it is a good one!

Easiest and Tastiest diet food EVER

Name it whatever you want: dieting, changing your lifestyle, taking control, a new you. It all comes down to the same thing: You want to be thin.

I am on my “I want to live to a 100” phase, and eating accordingly (well, most of the time)

The consumption of all the normal vices is obviously prohibited and often you crave something crunchy-crunchy. I found the best alternative to toast, chips, and other crunchy-crunchy foods.

I have been snacking on Baker’s Cracker bread (the Rye one) for ages. I have always added tuna and Trim (a lovely low fat salad dressing), Bovril and cheese, or Avocado. They are all pretty yummy, but the one recently discovered changed my life.

I now make myself Crackerbread with Low-Fat Sweet Chilli Cream Cheese from Woolworths. It is so delicious I will eat it even when I am not dieting. I thoroughly recommend this, no matter where you are in your “I want to be thin stage”

YUM!

Birthday

Happy birthday to me! I am 23…

I love having my birthday. I won’t even pretend that I am over the excitement of opening presents, eating cake, and having a party. So grown up, I know 🙂

Best part of birthday is cake – or in my case, my mother’s home-made lemon tart (it is so fricken delicious). And it doesn’t make you fat! Everyone knows you can’t gain weight on your birthday. Duh.

Take a look at my lovely gift from my sister. I am in love with the packaging!
