Series Review: Stranger Things Season 2 (2017)

Screen-Shot-2017-02-05-at-9.04.50-PM-1-1

If you’ve read my review of Season 1, well, then you know how much excited I felt for the arrival of Stranger Things Season 2. I love Stranger Things more than Eleven (Jane?) likes Eggo Waffles. I would have loved to binge the entire series, but work kept me so busy I had to act like a normal person and settle for one or two episodes each night.

The first season of Stranger Things was such a compelling hit because it was so unexpected. The shock of the upside down and the ingenuity of the writing contributed towards addiction and despondency I developed and experienced subsequently when I finished the measly amount of available episodes. Season two kept some of the elements, but loses that biggest appealing factor – the surprise. Sure the children are as adorable as ever, there are some seriously excellent scenes and flashbacks to the 80s, but the wow factor was missing save for the first episode and episodes eight and nine. The writing was off at times and felt lazy at times. Episode 7 irritated me so much I nearly didn’t finish the series. It was an absolute disaster. Removing Eleven from Hawkins and sending her to find her “sister” among a merry bunch of thieves for an entire episode? What a stupid power trip and unnecessary when there were a million other things that episode 8 could have focused on.

New additions Dacre Montgomery, Sadie Sink and Sean Astin were welcome additions. Dacre Montgomery seems particularly well cast as Billy the Bully – he’s an 80’s bully personified with his mullet, cigarettes, blaring rock music and really tight pants (circulation could not have been easy). He was particularly good in scenes where he loses his cool and you are able to see that this kid isn’t just a run of the mill bully; he has serious anger issues and is dangerous. Montgomery lived himself into the role and is utterly convincing – excellent work from this young Aussie who donned an American accent like it was no big thing. Sadie Sink is Max, who is in the unfortunate situation of being Billy’s stepsister. She hides her stress and worry and fear under some smart mouth comments, and I enjoyed her. It is also nice seeing another girl join the male dominated cast. Sean Astin as Bob was a sweetheart and I enjoyed seeing him in something again. He had some unlikely hero moments and although he was obviously written as a bit of a nerdy, offbeat character there was such goodness in him that you couldn’t help but root for him even though clearly he’s in the way of a romantic engagement I root for.

tmp_a5Z2mz_d51ca07da1ca96d4_wv_publicity_pre_launch_A_still_8.000001

I really like that they promoted Joe Keery to series regular as Steve Harrington. Steve has the best character growth, some of the best lines (#FarrahFawcett) and is such a likeable guy. He’s evolved from the typical high-school prick. He still at odds with Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) for the affections of Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and in season one I was unsure who I would choose, but Steve is now clearly my favorite. He has some great moments where he gets all parental and authoritative with the younger kids, and I had such a good time witnessing him. I like the mentoring relationship he’s begun with Dustin, who in himself is so darn adorable with his pearly whites.

Stranger-Things-pumpkins

My favorite characters at this stage are Hopper, Steve and Dustin. My least favorite is Nancy because that girl must stop messing with Steve and Jonathan’s feelings. I won’t go on a rampage against her but my tolerance for girls who play with multiple men’s’ feelings are quite strong. She redeemed herself somewhat in the last episode, though she still makes me narrow my eyes.

I won’t discuss all the characters – seriously, my love is strong. Caleb McLaughlin gets more screen time and I loved it. Lucas is such a great character and revealed his inner strength when he stood up to Billy. Finn Wolffhard has a great career ahead of him – boy can act! Noah Schnapp is updated to series regular and boy, did little Will suffer greatly again. Poor kid. He managed to be creepy and still have the audience feel protective over him. Milly Bobby Brown is as fascinating as always – she taps so much emotion into her performance it seems unreal that she’s only 13 years old.

The 80s nostalgia makes me so nostalgic – and I wasn’t even around back then. That dance scene in the final episode made me so darn happy and reminiscent about my own primary school days – who hasn’t done those awful “close” dances? So much love. Oh, and Dustin’s hair in that episode. GOSH so darn cute.

maxresdefault

The last two episodes make great strides in repairing the disaster of Episode 7. It is still more lopsided than it needs to be, and the writing needs a more structured approach in season 3. I would love to have Billy get involved in what is really going on in Hawkins, that would help wipe that punk ass attitude off him. I would also like to have him evolve a bit more, become a slightly decenter person while maintaining the ‘tude. If Eleven cannot be called Jane, that would also be great. Maybe Steve can get someone who isn’t Nancy because she doesn’t deserve him? More Dustin too, with his pearly whites.

Halloween Movie Review: Scream 2 (1997)

Scream 2 poster

Plot: Two years after the first series of murders, a new psychopath dons the Ghostface costume and a new string of killings begins.

Contains spoilers!

Sydney has miraculously survived the killings in Woodsboro and is now in college. She’s still close friends with Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) and in contact with Deputy Dewy (David Arquette). Dewy is as sassy as always, and has his comebacks lined up when he sees the formidable and career driven Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox). Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) might not be a serial killer, and he might not have killed Sydney’s mom, but he’s far from the nice guy and still desperately seeks his fame. Sydney is dating Derek (Jerry O’Connel) – a pretty sweet and smart guy, but can she really trust him after her previous boyfriend turned out to be a murderous sociopath? I naturally suspected the crap out of him, and was sad when he turned out to be innocent AND dead.

Scream 2

The opening scene isn’t close to as wrenching as in the first Scream, but still good. You have to love the 90’s fashion though. Jada Pinkett (I think this was before she was Smith) is all sassy and then gets stabbed to death. O well.

I do like that the films are consistent – the characters are the same and they are written in the same way. The tone remains witty and funny with some gems delivered from Dewy.

scream 4

Can I just mention again how much I love how loose footed these killers are? They are falling all over the place and it is hilarious. They can be punched and aren’t superhuman. I just love how Sydney punches the shit out of people. You go girl!

Scream 2 was pretty close to as good as the first film for me. The third one lacked compared to these, which is really sad, but the first two? Absolute gems.

Halloween Blindspot 2017: Scream (1996)

Scream 1996 Poster

Plot: A year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a new killer, who targets the girl and her friends by using horror films as part of a deadly game.

I watched Scream for Blindspot in early in the year, but sat with the review the entire year just so that I could do it in Halloween. I also demanded to watch the subsequent three films, so they will on as reviews this month as well.

I enjoyed the sharp and witty dialogue between the characters. They were quick mouthed towards the killer, and the killer himself had some excellent things to say too.  Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is a female heroine dream and her punching people made me really happy. She handled being stalked by a killer and simultaneously dealing with her mother’s death very well and I love seeing her throw a punch. She’s also not a complete pain in the ass and doesn’t moan about every damn thing.

1996, SCREAM

Scream is also pleasantly non-gory – sure there are some gruesome scenes but no torture (a complete no-no for me) as I was expecting. The deaths were satisfyingly dramatic. The first death is just so sad and well directed – I was ready to actually just cry for Drew Barrymore (however – take the popcorn off the stove man!)

Scream 1996 4

Deputy Dewy is such a fun and hilarious character. David Arquette nailed that role and his facial expressions are admirable being able to change his complete facial structure. Gale Weathers is a character that you really want to hate but end up admiring more than anything else by the end of the film. Neve Campbell’s Sydney is a kickass heroine and I was cheering for her all the ways through. I also liked Jamie Kennedy’s Randy – this guy was on top of things and had all the information for a horror movie well documented and studied.

Scream 1996 2

So you can gather that I had a great time with this film. It is a lot of fun, and there are some jump scenes here and there but it is actually impossible to be really scared while watching this film. If you somehow managed to not see this film in the million years its’ been out there, definitely go watch it!

Halloween Month Movie Review: Hocus Pocus (1993)

h_hocuspocus_da3e97b8

Plot: After three centuries, three witch sisters are resurrected in Salem, Massachusetts on Halloween night, and it is up to two teenagers, a young girl, and an immortal cat to put an end to their reign of terror once and for all.

What better month to finally watch Hocus Pocus? Following news of an imminent and probably unnecessary sequel, combined with the onset of Halloween, I knew I had to finally sit down and watch this favored and loved cult classic. It was a completely different movie than I thought it would be! The acting of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy is amazing and hilarious. Sarah Jessica Parker in particular surprised me. She’s just Carrie Bradshaw in my mind, and I couldn’t see her as something else. Well, as the beautiful, crazy and really damn weird Sarah Anderson she was all the levels of entertaining – such an inspired and crazy performance. The three actresses as the Sanderson sisters work great together; they share symmetry in their movements so accurate it is almost like watching a dance routine. Realizing that Sean Murray – always Timothy McGee in NCIS to me – is the poor Thackery Binx also gave me such delight.

maxresdefault

I really enjoyed the performances by the Sanderson sisters and how ridiculous they were and still so nastily evil, but I did find the story just a bit lacking. There isn’t always too much structure, but even with this flaw I still had a really entertaining time with it. It’s the generic “the youth defeats the evil” storyline, and while you would just love to question everything about it, I suggest you don’t, and watch Bette Midler with really weird dentistry enchant you and make you cackle with glee.

Have you seen Hocus Pocus? Let me know what you thought!

links i loveHallo! I’m back again with these – I enjoy making them so much 🙂 🙂

Have you seen that Gilmore Girls is (temporarily) being revived by Netflix? Yep! A quick list of what I want to see (I know there was at least ten million similar lists floating around, so I will keep it short)

  • What happens to Rori – does she stay in journalism? Achieve her dreams? Marry Logan?
  • What happens to Lorelai and Luke. I mean come on!
  • What happens to the Inn
  • Did Paris Geller become a doctor?
  • What is going on with Kirk, Taylor, Miss Patty?
  • How are they handling the death of Edward Hermann?
  • Just what is Emily doing with herself?
  • Lane?
  • Sookie?
  • Can we please fit in Jess Mariano somewhere?
  • EVERYONE?

Sonny BillThis pic has circulated the internet after South-Africa lost to New-Zealand 18-20 in the Rugby World Cup Semi-Final. Unlike Japangate, I’m not even mad that the Boks lost. They played amazing and either team could have taken it. I really adore the young guys in the Springbok team at the moment – Lood de Jager looks like a giant puppy running around and Eben Etzebeth is just plain hot. This pic of Sonny Bill Williams consoling the 21-year old Jesse Kriel was the sweetest, because SPORT. (and then after the All Blacks well deserved win at the Finals, he gave his medal to the kid. Can I please marry SBW now, please?!)

Movie Review: The Shining (1980)

Shining-poster-1

Plot:  A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future. (via IMDb)

We chose to watch it as our Halloween night event and I wanted to leave as soon as I saw it was a Stephen King adaption, because let’s face it no one makes you shit in your pants better than the King. I was told to stay put, and being the obliging person that I am I sat down to watch not so quietly. The movie was damn terrifying because it was so well directed. So little happens in the beginning and the slowly building tension works really well. Jack Nicholson is everything in here. This expression of him still freaks me out:

0

A good horror movie should have (just some ideas I have about it)

A good villain: CHECK. Nicholson was everything in here, and he made the movie so thrilling by his madness. He went from a vaguely selfish and irresponsible father to a maniac in a heartbeat.

Freaky as fuck kids: TRIPLE check. Those girls, the young boy and his “imaginary friend” were all just too creepy.

shining girls

A story that makes little sense: Yes again. I thought the plot had a few holes in that could have been filled with necessary explanations. The whole room 237 story wasn’t really made clear why little satan boy (we named him this) got strangled and why Nicholson ended up kissing a mouldy, it just happened. Was this where the original murder took place?

Things I didn’t like

0000216977

The lead female actress! She was so useless. WHO swings a baseball bat like that when confronted with a psychopathic killer? The running around with the knife irritated me endlessly and reminded me of this one girl I know that would do the exact same thing in that situation.

Those freaky girls could have been much freakier. I mean, I wanted to jump when I saw them and yet they were underused.

The term “Shining”wasn’t really explained. Are they all people with imaginary friends or are they people who can read minds or are they all people who can see into the future? #makesnosense

Things I did like:

It wasn’t gory and it was terrifying. They didn’t have to use guts to get your attention; the story was interesting enough to keep you watching.

The setting: It is beautiful and remote and you can see why people would get Cabin Fever and start slashing at each other.

Jack Nicholson, as previously mentioned. He was SUPERB. He has always had this mobile face but I’ve really only seen him in later roles where he is older, but he was great as a young man too.

How polite they all are. People were just so polite back then. Now people confuse being polite with being a flirt, but it is nice to know that only 20 years back people were allowed to be nice and complimentary all the time (maybe the other people weren’t so stupid then)

You jump even when you know they are deliberately trying to make you jump. My one friend jumped out of his skin when this happened:

Recommendation: If you like being scared, go for it!!

Halloween Week: Five Things Friday: Scary Supernatural Episodes

Halloween-Pumpkin-7

So, boohoo, the scariest month of the year is drawing to a close. I never thought I would get so into getting jumping out of my skin, but these past few years I have been having such fun with Halloween parties I realised I did need to see some horrors as well, if only for the whole experiencing new things in 2014 mission.

Well, I did, but not nearly enough! I watched The Woman in Black, a movie who made me question my belief that all horrors are low budget and badly done. I LOVED this movie really, and it gave me some exceptional chills. The other Horror/Thriller I stumbled across was Cry Wolf, and although it didn’t scare me a bit, I had some fun watching it!

This year for Halloween we are having a movie marathon at a friend’s house, so you can rest assured I will be reviewing some horrors in November. (PS: It’s effing NOVEMBER, folks)

Today’s Five things post revolves around one of my favorite series out there, Supernatural. I am not going to lie, I only watched until season 5, because my beloved trustworthy informants let me know that anything from season 6 would not make me the happiest bug out there. So without further ado, here are some very jumpity jump moments Supernatural gave poor innocent me:

Season 1, Episode 10 (Asylum)

asylum

rating 3Season one was the absolute best, a season where no supernatural element got repeated twice and the producers had a truckload of things to explore. This season is solid enough and Azazel evil enough to make you tune in for more each time.

In Asylum, Dean and Sam travel to Illinois to investigate the Roosevelt Asylum a place where criminally insane patients were locked up. The boys quickly realize that the patients weren’t treated particularly through ethical approved methods, and they all hated one particular doctor intensely. They establish rather quickly that the place is indeed haunted, but naturally everything is not as it seems and they find out that most of the ghosts aren’t as malicious as the look, and  and some of them just want their peace but are trapped in this world.

Rating: 3/5 Scares

Not in any way the scariest or the strangest of the series, but Asylum works really well because it explores something that is actually quite scary in itself – a place where mentally ill people are kept. That doctor freaked me out, and the whole episode was shot in such a way that the suspense and intrigue kept building.

Season 2, Episode 6 (No Exit)

noexit05

rating 4Jo, the daughter of Ellen, a lady whose husband hunted with Sam and Dean’s father, gets it into her head to investigate the disappearance of blond girls in an apartment building in Philadelphia.

Jo is blonde, and that makes her the best target for the ghost of H H Holmes, America’s first serial killer, and she is quickly locked up with his other victims, in boxes waiting to waste to death. Sam and Dean, particularly motivated by Ellen’s threats, race against time to find Jo before she dies, and find a way to keep Holmes at bay since they can’t burn his remains.

Rating: a YUCK EWW GRRR 4/5

This wasn’t the freakiest ever, until Holmes started peering through holes and coffins and leering at those girls. I have never been happier to be a brunette, let me tell you. I was jumping around when he peered through those wooden crates and his entire manner was just too much for me. YEUGH.

Season 2, Episode 16 (Roadkill)

roadkill

rating 5

Roadkill entertains us with the story of a young woman who wakes up to find out she has been in an accident, and a man is hunting her. Sam and Dean are there to save the day, and even tries to help find her missing husband and car, which seems to have disappeared.  It doesn’t sound very scary right? Just another Supernatural episode where we can look at the delectable Dean and the homely Sam (not even sorry, I just don’t like the whiney brat).

WELL here is one of the defining moments in Supernatural for me: One night I was watching series on my tablet in my bed, just like any other twenty first centurion (can I even phrase it like that?) spending precious sleeping hours on shows and then Roadkill began. It was good and eery but not very scary all in all. Then that damn ghost jumped through the window on one scene and I LET MY TABLET FALL FLAT ON MY FACE, jumped out of bed and stuttered like a lunatic. It is the biggest miracle I didn’t throw my tablet against the closest wall, let me tell you, it was very close. My little sister witnessed it and naturally had to tell the entire world what she saw, and I have never lived down that story with my family or friends, so I am sharing it on here today so that you all can have another giggle with me. The best part is it was so obvious what was going to happen, and when it did I still had the biggest jump ever. Well done, producers, well done.

Rating: 5/5 for sheer damn surprise

Season 2, Episode 20 (What Is and What should never be)

djinn

rating 3

In What Is and What should never be Dean is hunting a Djinn. He nearly catches him but the Djinn manages to send Dean to an dream world where everything is how Dean secretly wants his life to be. He is married to a beautiful woman, his mother is alive and active in his life, and he and Sam are brothers who are merely brothers and not completely dependent on each other as they are forced to be.

It is a rather sad episode, because Dean is and will always be my favorite Winchester brother and I really think he deserves more than life has delt him (taking care of the whiney whiney Sam Winchester). That aside, I thought the Djinn was unique, well created and very freaky. The story was excellently developed and had a good angle, because the Djinn’s power came from leaving you in your perfect world while he was busy destroying you in actual reality.

Rating: a YUCK EWW GRRR 3/5

Season 3, Episode 2 (The Kids are Alright)

changeling

Dean and Sam finds themselves in Indiana, where Dean meets one of his lady loves again. She has a very charming child, who is eerily like Dean and makes him briefly question the kid’s parentage. However, Lisa assures him that the kid is not his, but there is still something very wrong in town. Adults keep dying and children keep acting weirder and weirder, and they soon discover Changelings, creatures that takes over the bodies of children and feeds on their parents.

rating 4   Rating: 4/5: a nice scary yuck all in all as well as a nasty one.

The Changeling’s mouths/faces!!!!!!! FML never again. I really did like the kid, as well as Lisa and could really see how hard it must have been for Dean to leave her behind and follow in his father’s footsteps. BUT THANKS SUPERNATURAL FOR MAKING CHILDREN ALL THE CREEPIER. Like it was more necessary.

Hope you enjoyed my list, and let me know which moments in Supernatural gave you the heeby-jeebies.

Halloween Week: Woman In Black

WIB poster

Plot: A young lawyer travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals (via IMDb)

Scare O’Meter: 3 scares out of 5

rating 3

Oh em ghee! Look, I am a scaredy cat. I won’t even deny it. Give me violence, I can deal with that shizz, give me terrorism, I will be endlessly fascinated. Give me a serial killer, I will be hooked. Give me a nice little psychological horror? I will hide under my blankets yelling for my mama.

I was impressed with the directing. The movie was shot in such clear, contrasting lines, it reminded me somewhat of a Hitchcock film (I am sorry if I do offend by that statement, but the dramatic contrasts and sharp lines reminded me terribly of Suspicion). The way this movie was directed made it more eery at the end of the day.

Daniel Radcliff never really impressed me with his portrayal of his iconic Potter roles, but I really enjoyed him in here. He manages to be distressed and determined at the same time, and shows with a film like this he can carve a name out for himself in the current entertainment industry.

The scariest of the film all came from obvious tricks that managed to make you jump even when you knew what was going down. I had some seriously Dafuq moments with those creepy as fuck dolls, and then Arthur goes and willingly winds them up on his own at one stage?!?!

I thought Ciaran Hinds was Stephen Fry who had  losta LOT of weight. My bad. I always enjoy both actors and thought he was handling his grief in this movie way better than his loony wife, who also freaked me out at one stage quite spectacularly.

Tips to surviving when visiting a freaky English town:

Don’t go to Freaky English Town (FET).

If you are at a FET, don’t go into spooky old mansions. Ain’tnobody got time for that.

If the villagers tell you to LEAVE, you LEAVE.

Don’t invite your son on a working trip, basic knowledge.

Don’t wind up freaky old school dolls that look like it had a demonic encounter sometime in the last five hundred years.

Don’t try and fix things, just leave.

Here are some (patented) clips of me and Zoë discussing this movie while I was watching. Enjoy!

Cry Wolf was better than expected. When the friend I visited mentioned that it is a good movie I was like erm, YOU were the one that told me Grown Ups 2 is funny, but persistent was the friend and we watched it. The movie is obviously low budget, but the actors acted just fine, the horror wasn’t too much (I don’t even think classifying this as horror is correct), and it had a few tinges of scary but not enough to keep me awake. I enjoyed Jared Padalecki much more in here as in Supernatural, because he wasn’t shedding a damn tear every time something scary happened. Seeing Ian Morris pre-Pretty Little Liars and Once Upon a Time was fun – his British accent is the best thing ever to happen and he just seems so sweet. Jon Bon Jovi plays the sleazy teacher in here, and he surprised me the most with his acting chops. He did the slick, slimy teacher so well I was repulsed all the time, which was something they were aiming for.

I could have told everyone in that school that Dodger was Dodgy, because she looked the part, played the part and was generally a spoiled rich girl in desperate need of attention. I really didn’t like her much, because the tricks she pulled werenot that far from the manipulative lengths a lot of women of a certain calibre would pull if they wanted something their way.

The movie didn’t drag its’ butt so it gets major points there, and the storyline was clearly outlined and not immersed in a pool of confusion, something that happens way too much with low budget films. It had a nice little plot twist near the end, something completely surprising, at least to me, which made a lot of things more realistic that had happened earlier on.

Halloween week AHEAD!
