It’s Friday, folks!

I really liked compiling last week’s five female characters who kick ass on the small screen, so today I am bringing you this: 5 Male Characters in a series who kicks ass while looking DAMN fine

Jax Teller, Sons of Anarchy, played by Charlie Hunnam

 

I was so happy when CH dropped out of the 50 Shades of Grey movie. Whether it was voluntary or they forced him, starring in that shit would have damaged how much I love Jax Teller.

SOA messes with your mind a lot because you are on the criminal’s side and JT even more because you are vouching for a man that is basically a murdering gangster with questionable morals.

However, I love how badass JT is. He is gorgeous to look at and he has such an attitude that I find extremely appealing. I like that he is at the most basic level actually a man with deep love for the people closest to him and how protective he can be when someone messes with his nearest and dearest.

Dean Winchester, Supernatural, played by Jensen Ackles

 

Ah, Dean. He is without a doubt the most appealing of the Winchester brothers. I hated the whiney Snotbag Sam Winchester and how Dean always had to clean up after him. I love Dean’s dedication to his job and his family, his music, clothes and food, his Impala and his courage to never stop moving.

I think Jensen Ackles was excellently cast as Dean Winchester. He was one of the only characters in the show I constantly had sympathy for and rooted for.

Special Agent Seeley Booth, Bones, played by David Boreanaz

Some characters you support because of their looks and some because of who they are. There is absolutely nothing wrong with how Booth looks, but it is mostly his character that got him on this list. I enjoy his relationship with Bones and how he protects her but understands that she is independent and needs to do some things on her own. I find his hero complex endearing and how he always needs to be there for the people in his life.

Harvey Specter, Suits, played by Gabriel Macht

 

It is the suits and the education and work ethic and that hairstyle that would have looked absolutely stupid on anyone else. He is hardworking and very dedicated to the people around him and is okay with lifting himself up. Harvey Specter makes Suits amazing – I think all the other characters just pale in comparison.

Patrick Jane, The Mentalist, played by Simon Baker

 

He is without one of the most layered, complex characters on television. I thoroughly enjoy that attitude that gets him slapped ever so often, the dedication to finding his wife’s killer, and his own killer instinct when it comes to people bullshitting police investigations. Simon Baker was as well cast as Jane as Robert Downey Jnr. is cast as Iron Man – they both bring something essential to their characters that just make everything more believable.

Weekend, Book Challenge and raging at the weather

Happy, erm, Monday

So, I was spectacularly late this morning for work. It is raining like it is England, and I am not impressed. I hate driving in the rain. Johannesburgers are horrific drivers at best but it seems that in the rain they think it is Need for Speed Joburg. Meh.

Speaking of driving, I finally have my own car! It feels unbelievable that I can do whatever I want. I have been unhappy with my car-lessness for years, so I am so incredibly happy about it.

Friday I visited my sister (in my own car). Saturday said sister brought me car seats as a belated birthday gift and that night I drove myself to a braai at friends.

Sunday was my dad’s birthday. Happy 58^th birthday Daddy! We celebrated at my sister’s house with brunch – our picnic plans were ruined by the rain once again.

I finished Suits Season three, which was absolutely good. I also caught up with Pretty Little Liars Season four. Without giving away too much to those who still needs to watch, the latest A development is deliciously freaky. I also appreciate that the show is getting real development – season three was all about stalling.

At the braai I went to we suddenly had the inexplicable urge to know our Chinese Zodiac signs. Apparently I am a Horse. Which is a lot better than being a Rat, I might mention. But it is supposed to mean I am more cunning than intelligent. Watch out folks.

Book Challenge progress and countdown

I had a good reading stint this weekend. I read and finished The Fault in Our Stars (cry cry cry). I also read The Notebook – one of Nicholas Sparks’ better attempts, and finished the Rescue, also by Sparks, which wasn’t the best of attempts by him. I thought to finish Shopaholic Abroad (Sophie Kinsella), but not even for finishing a book challenge will I read such atrocious nonsense.

I am officially in the last month of my Book Challenge countdown. I am already at 86 books, which means fourteen books left. I am so happy I decided to track how many books I can read in twelve months. I have certainly thought it must be a fair number, because I am always reading – even if I am in a slump I will be reading. It is part of who I am. I could never change that.

I have to say the only drawback of doing this was that I couldn’t reread my favorite books – or I could but I couldn’t add it to the list. If I remember correctly I only reread Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Indigo Spell (Richelle Mead). At the beginning of March I will probably start going through my favorite books.

New authors

One of the perks of not rereading books was definitely exploring new authors. Some I won’t be persuing again (Katie Fford, Patricia Cornwell) but some others I definitely will. I really enjoyed Veronica Roth (DIVERGENT WAS AWESOME), Francis Scott Fitzgerald (the Great Gatsby), and Bryan Green (The Fault in Our Stars).

Reading List:

Karin Slaughter – Zoe’s been telling me to read these books for ages, and I am going to try them. There are 7 in the series and I will probably start tonight on them.

The Quinn Legacy by Nora Roberts – 4 books.

7+4 = 11 + 86 = 97. If you know of any three books worth reading please mention them to me!

Really want to read the sequel to Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, which was amazing, but it doesn’t seem like a good idea to tackle a 700 page strong novel with four weeks left in the challenge!

Best of 2013: Series

Morning 🙂

Welcome to my first post of the Best of 2013 Series. Today’s post contains the best series I watched this year. Some of them were produced before 2013.

Sons of Anarchy Season 1 and 2 (2008 and 2008-2009 respectively)

The Sons of Anarchy is an outlaw motorcycle club who makes their cash in dealing in illegal arms. Jax Teller, the son of the now deceased founder, starts questioning the club’s directions when he finds documents his father had written. Season one and two follows the drama and violence that surrounds Jax Teller (played by Charlie Hunnam) and the rest of the crew.

I really had no idea I would love this series so much. I perceive it as a MAN Show, meaning guys find it awesome to watch and ladies suffer through it (okay, watching Charlie Hunnam isn’t suffering, I mean the storyline). There is some pretty intense drama in here, and I was appalled at the amount of violence. That said; the show is extremely captivating.  I really went straight into the second season just so I could know what happened. I am planning on starting the third season pretty soon, and I really hope the drama continues.

The Carrie Diaries Season 1 2013

This is the frothiest show on my list. It is really cute and fluffy, and I know for a fact some people will chew off their wrists if they were forced to watch this. I enjoyed it though. It is senseless fun, and it is nice seeing the iconic Carrie Bradshaw suffer through high school. The show needs to develop a more intense storyline if it wants to survive another season though. They aren’t using Carrie’s acting ability to her full potential, and the story sadly flattens out sometimes.

Suits Season 1 and 2 2011, 2012-2013 respectively

I LOVE THIS SHOW. I heard rumors about its amazing entertainment value from many people, but only when my friend Zoë started raving I knew I would have to try it out.

Suits tells the tale of how a genius kid, Mike, manages to convince the excellent Harvey Specter to hire him as attorney at the law firm he works for, Pearson Hardman. Harvey teaches Mike to be a cutthroat lawyer like himself, while fielding attacks from all sides.

I don’t often watch law-drama. It isn’t a bad field, but I’m not able to say that it is my favourite avenue to explore. That is why this show is so refreshing to watch. It manages to bring all the lawyers to a glamorous stage, while showing how sneaky and underhand they really are. Harvey Specter is one of my favorite characters to watch in television – he is brilliant, hardworking, and brutally honest and looks great in a suit. His secretary Donna is a prime example of what a secretary should be – sarcastic, efficient and protective to whom she serves.

I can’t wait for season three!

Supernatural Season 5 2009-2010

Season 4 should have been called “The season where Sam shows what a selfish brat he is”. I didn’t enjoy it too much, really. I am so glad season 5 is back to a place where Sam is a little less selfish and thus a little less annoying. The inclusion of Castiel is brilliant, and he is well portrayed. I have been warned that season six is really not good, so I guys this will be the last of the Winchester brothers for me. It better end well!

The Mentalist Season 4 2011-2012

Patrick Jane continues his hunt for Red John, a brilliant serial killer who murdered his family. Every time Patrick thinks he is close to finding him, Red John eludes once again, and most of the time someone dies. The Mentalist is a brilliant series, and Simon Baker is at his best here. He is the embodiment of Patrick Jane is like Robert Downey Jnr is the embodiment of Tony Stark. I really have to watch season 5 to see whether he finally captures Red John – this series is on a knife point of becoming repetitive.

Weekend stuff

Reading

Insurgent by Veronica Roth. I went to bed at two am on Saturday because I was reading Divergent. I am such a bad ass. LOL. It is very good. The second book is a bit stretched out, but it is very good as well. The books have the same train of thought of Hunger Games, but manage to be completely original at the same time. They are my 64^th and 65^th books in the challenge

Watching

Finally got to go to the cinema on Friday. WOW. I wanted to watch Oblivion, but that had sadly finished. So I watched About Time (With Rachel MacAdams) and had such a good time. It was wonderful and funny. It is the type of Romantic Comedy people enjoy even if they don’t like Romcoms.

I am on the last episode of Season 2 suits. Still in love with the fast paced lawyer drama. It is just that good. Afterwards I am going to watch Supernatural season three, to make my friend happy.

Le Good life

I had way too much chocolate the last week. I don’t really care, because I was studying Chemistry, and you need chocolate if you are studying Chemistry. This week I will learn to refrain myself in favor of losing weight, and I am determined to succeed.

5 Things Friday: 5 Things happening right now

South-Africa’s multiply disordered government

Our President put his foot in his mouth – Again

E-tolls is a new tolling system on the roads in Johannesburg that the South-African government hopes to implement. It is angering motorists because it is going to be ridiculously expensive, we are already paying an astronomical amount of tax and fuel prices are already so high nobody needs extra expenses.

Mr. Jacob Zuma released a statement saying plenty of unsavoury things about the anger directed towards E-tolling. Read it here. Great job, sir. We know you can’t run for President again but I’m sure your political party is super chuffed with you calling their primary voters backwards. GREAT JOB. I am actually imagining the Democratic Alliance (another political party in South-Africa) hosting a party in your honour.

Watching

I am currently watching Suits now. I expected it to be good, really, but was surprised at how much I am entertained by it. It is cut-throat, fast paced and high powered, and the characters are incredibly sarcastic and driven, and I love that.

Movies

There are finally good movies being released. I love the whole experience of the movie – going to the cinema, getting popcorn, sitting in the dark and watching something come to life on a huge screen. I haven’t been the movies for a bit – mostly because I was broke, very busy and there weren’t any great movies on. THAT is why I am so excited. I’m going to make some time soon and go see at least one or two the next few weeks.

On the 8^th of November, Thor: The Dark World is being released here in South-Africa. I can’t wait to see what Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman have done as Thor and Jane again.

Next on my watch list is Catching Fire which will be released on the 22^nd of November. Part of the Hunger Games series focuses on Peeta and Katniss when they get sent back into the arena only a year after they won the Games together. Katniss knows President Snow hates her, but will she be able to be victorious again? I am skeptic about the actor cast as Finnick Odair, but I am willing to be open minded and see if they bring the second book justice.

Excited

In a month’s time, I am traveling to Cape Town, South-Africa, to go to the WSPID conference. Cape Town is one of the places I haven’t visited in my own country, and I am honestly excited to go there.

Desperately in need of:

A car,

A new haircut.

Time: For studying, Reading, Relaxing, Sleeping and Watching Series. All these tasks are crammed into the little time I have in the evening, and it is exhausting me. Luckily I am on study leave next week, so I have time then to study.
