#100HappyDays: Days 43 – 48

I can’t believe this challenge is going so quickly! Not going to lie, my penchant for self sabotage sometimes peeks out and … motivates me to only post two posts on one day rather than on separate days. However, this is my challenge, so it makes me quite happy šŸ˜€

43

Day 43:

Spent Valentine’s day with my sisters and my mom, had a fantastic breakfast at Life in Mall of the South and finally found a copy of the long searched for Kill Bill Volume 1.

44

Day 44:

The caption on my Instagram post says it all: These books attacked me and forced me to buy them. I had no say whatsoever.

45

Day 45:

Winning the war on sugar is not easy, but the days where I evict the victor is truly marvelous and very frequent lately.

46

DAy 46:

Had a GALentines day and went to watch How To Be Single. So much fun!

47

Day 47:

Woohoo! Finished Season 2. It is better than Season 1 at least.

48

Day 48:

I was so impressed with Takealot. I firstly got my Unisa textbook on a 50% sale, and chose two cheesy Afrikaans DVDs to be delivered with it. Much to my surprise it was delivered the following afternoon.

What is making you happy as of late?

Life Lately: February 2016

February

So, February. I am totally okay that you are here. January wasn’t even bad, but it was the trial month for the year and I am happy to get things in full speed right now.

Ā 100happydays

#100HappyDays: This project is still ongoing, and I am still enjoying it. There are days where I struggle to find things to post about, so the challenge proves its’ point: you need to be able to find something happy daily regardless of how small it might seem to you.

Blog: I am actively considering renaming my blog. I’m not going to say what the title is going to be right now, because someone might nab it before I have it set up, and then I will be mightily upset with whoever it is. (#paranoid). I DO like the sound of it and have run it by my confidantes, who agree. I just want to work out the logistics of things before I go full speed into it.

Ā longestride

Reading: I somehow misplaced my darling Big Magic book. I am so peeved. I need to finish reading it and then I need to gush on here about it. Like, WHY universe? I will find you book! I also started with The Longest Ride. It is written by Mr. Soppy himself, Nicholas Sparks. It’s part of my book reading list for this year and I just want to get cracking on it.

Blindspot: This is officially in disaster mode. I swear I have such affinity for ignoring the fuck out of deadlines. Each. And. Every. Time. I looked around a bit for copies of what I need to watch, gave up pretty quickly, and am now stuck. ANYWAY, I’ll get watching soon and be posting ALL THE REVIEWS.

Ā Arrow

Series: Goodness. Finally got around to Arrow. The acting. Erm. It is… SPECTACULAR? The plot is good enough, the acting and the effects are just a bit hilarious tbh.

Tinder: I should seriously get up a few posts on my experience over there. Let’s just say restraining orders and a dictionary are things I want to get for some of the guys I’ve spoken to.

Unisa: Studies and assignments, here I come. Now that I know what to expect for the practicals, I am really excited for that too. Just still so disgusted with Unisa that they mess around with their students so badly.

Being healthy: I’m really excited about this. I’ve said from the start I am not going to starve or deprave myself, and I certainly won’t be following any Fad diets. I just want to find a way of lifestyle that is maintainable as well as healthy. I’m getting there. The hardest right now is the sugar. I’ve cut it out that I’m about 98% sugar free in whatever I consume. I’m still growling at hidden sugars. They are the reason I have trust issues. Moving on. I plan to write about my revelations about changing your eating habits, and what myths I’ve come to believe and not believe about losing weight. I can tell you if you use the word ā€œdietā€, I don’t like it. It contains about as much positive reinforcement as the phrase ā€œNew year’s resolutionsā€. Sure, lifestyle change sounds way pompous, but if it isn’t a lifestyle change, it’s not going to work. BOOM.

Tinder. I hope to get up some posts about his experience in the next two weeks. It is just the right time of year for all the romantic fools out there.

Excited for:

Literally ALL THE WEDDINGS. I have two weddings and an engagement party in March and another wedding, bachelorette and kitchen tea in April.

How to be single – this looks so great

#100HappyDays: Days 1-8

Happy Monday everyone!

To make this shitty day better, here is a recap of my first 8 days on the #100HappyDays challenge

Day 1: Spending time with my bestie is always the most magnificent time. Just as a side note – she makes AMA-ZING cottage pie.

IMG_20160101_190819Day 2: Adventures across Nelspruit: Wool shopping (I was coerced, hem hem); very delicious iced Coffee to combat the heat; as well as a lurvely meal with lurvely people to say bye-bye till next time.

IMG_20160102_215852

Day 3: Roadtrip back home: More Iced Coffee, this time from Mugg ‘n Bean (yes, you are spotting a trend).

IMG_20160103_160159

Day 4: The consumer based market knows everyone way too well. They had a massive sale at one of the big retailers here in South-Africa (who isn’t getting a shout-out because their service is atrocious). Anyhoo, got these New Balance running shoes on half price and I was dancing all the way.

new balance

Day 5: Continued running and made myself some healthy and delicious dinner afterwards. So happy with my steak – I am so not a master at making it but this turned out lovely!

20160105_191209

Day 6: The University I study with had me in a constant stressball for the last couple of months. I had to update my course code, and they had changed all their systems and what-whats. Needless to say, I was freaked out when it ran into the new year and I still hadn’t received feedback from them – you do NOT mess with a part-time student that is this close to graduating. They FINALLY got back to me this week and I was doing somersaults in the office

UNISA

Day 7: Gifts from Hermanus, Western Cape

20160107_191432

Day 8: The heatwave has been pulsing through Gauteng like mad. We’ve been running around at 40 degrees celcius a day, and about 22 degrees at night. It has really felt like hell on earth and everyone has been miserable in this heat (and incredibly stupid on social media, but more on that later). On Friday the rain finally came pouring down from the skies and the people didn’t even moan. I had a terrible drive back from work – think roads steaming from the heat and rain contact, poring rain and a highway – and no power thanks to the thunderstorm, but it has been absolutely amazing just to cool down a bit.

20160108_165607

Well, there we go. Feedback on noticing the everyday happy for the first week (and one day). What makes you happy? Let me know!!

BIRTHDAY!!

I’m super old now, but somehow I’m not really feeling any different. The only strange thing this year is that I’m very relaxed over my birthday – I just want happiness and peace and not a lot of fuss. We went to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens on Sunday and it was very lovely. The weather agreed and it was all sunny and pretty and green. I consider those Gardens as my second favorite place to go to in Johannesburg and it was so nice to visit there again.

House Break in and other criminal activities

I don’t think any particular law abiding South-African will take offence when I say that we have a huge problem with crime in our country. We have so much amazing things in our country to be proud of, yet we are still faced with senseless crimes that mostly gets justified or ignored by our ruling party. My big issue with the world, but South-Africa in particular, is how easy we can ignore or forget crimes we’ve heard of. Look, if you live in my country you do need to somehow block out all the negativity you hear or you will constantly live in fear, but it is too easy to forget horrific events. What I’m basically trying to say that you feel removed from violence and crime when you are not physically involved.

Earlier this week we heard that one of the ladies at work had been held hostage and that her car had been highjacked when she was sitting with her boyfriend as he wasĀ stocktaking at work. I was so furious on her behalf – her car had been her pride and joy and she had only had it and her license for about three months before this happened.Ā  I am so relieved that she and her boyfriend made it out unharmed – shaken, sure, but not raped or killed, which is very rare nowadays.

Just as I was getting over my anger for that incident, we received a phone call from my brother in law. He had just gotten home and the second he walked in he noticed that their television was missing. Further investigation showed that the house had been ransacked and numerous precious items were taken – the TV, his computer screen, his brother’s home and work laptop and a large amount inherited jewelry that had been in the family for decades. There are miracles in this horrible tale: miraculously the cats and dog are fine, they weren’t hurt, the thieves couldn’t access the safe that holds the family guns and cameras, the thieves didn’t find Ā the (a spectacularly large and irresponsible amount of) cash. My sister’s brother in law’s girlfriend usually stays there in the week and works from there but she was home with her parents – another miracle that can’t be ignored.

So I am relieved but I am furious. My friends and family work hard for what they have and take pride in what they’ve accomplished for themselves and then some entitled idiot walks in and takes everything just like that (The security footage showed this went down in all of ten minutes)

Another disgraceful talking point is our Police Service. There is a station less than fifteen minutes where my sister lives and the police took AN HOUR to get there, because they ā€œcouldn’t find the place then turned backā€ Yep, those were actual words. They’ve obviously never heard of these miraculous inventions called cell phones or GPS because who could have possibly used those to quickly get the directions again that had already been given?

After this I heard that a girl I’ve known for years had been attacked while jogging close to my house. The area I’m living in is supposed to be extremely safe, so I went through such a crisis after this attack.

Oh, a note to everyone out there: Don’t ever tell a person that they need to be thankful in such situations. Yes, these were all miracles, but I personally feel that the notion that we have to beĀ thankfulĀ that our houses were only partially ransacked is mad.

Some questions asked by the police:

ā€œDid you give anyone permission to break into your home?ā€

ā€œDid you see any fingerprints?ā€

That is not to mention that the one officer sat texting for ten minutes before she even got out of the police vehicle.

So yeah, I’m pissy about this. We live in a country that tells you when you get robbed that it happens to everyone, be glad you’re alive. OR: you should protect your house enough that no one can break in. This sounds exactly like the type of culture that teaches women to not get raped instead of teaching men not to rape (that is another mindset you get in this country)

So here’s a notion:

What about we get a police chief with actual credentials instead of a membership with the ruling party?

What if we train police officers properly, teach them how to appropriately react in crisis situations?

Actually work on stopping crime instead of sympathizing with perpetrators?

Okay, now that that is off my chest, I will stop moaning and somehow remember how miraculous my country really is.

Housesitting and Kitler the Cat

I am currently housesitting for a friend and having loads of fun. It is quite lovely to be on my own and do whatever I want. I have to admit that it’s a huge adjustment to be solely responsible for feeding myself! I’m getting better at it but I can see when I have my own place there won’t be a lot of cooking going on. Also, washing clothes is such a schlep.I am also the current feeder of Kitler, my friend’s kitten. We have a very abusive relationship. I am scratched all over and regularly get jumped against.

Ā TBS5

True Blood Season Five:

People really weren’t exaggerating when they said this is the worst season of the lot. It is SO bad. Every character is up to his own business, the plot does not thicken it just becomes painful and unbearable; the acting becomes worse and suddenly the vampires’ eyes bulge when they get killed. I finished it by watching it and alternating with other stuff just to give my brain a rest from all the ā€œWhat the fucksā€ that were running around. I’ve started Season six now which is miraculously better than season five.

silvershadows

Reading:

I’m still reading Silver Shadows by Richelle Mead. It’s not bad, I’m just not really focused on reading right now while I have so much going on at the moment. I’m probably going to try and read the Night’s Circus first to understand what ZoĆ« is trying to express about it šŸ˜€

Watching:

Series wise I’m going to trick myself into watching True Blood Season 6. I have a yen to watch Game of Thrones again before the new season airs and the same goes for Sherlock (although there is still way too much time left before the new season starts). Someone let it slip to my sister that Rob Stark dies and now she’s refusing to continue with it. I don’t even blame her, though. Ā #FuckFiltch

As for movies I’m steering clear of the cinema until the Jan/Feb slump is over. I have a few films of 2014 I still want to watch and am nearly finished with the Theory of Everything (Sob, it’s fucking glorious).

Unisa

I’m hopeful that this is my second last year with Unisa. I have two practicals this year and it is quite debatable how I will get everything done, but hopefully with some super hard work and excellent planning I can master it all!

And some True Blood Memes, because it’s weekend

Bill drinking game bill meme

(You’d think for such a ridiculous show there’d be more memes around)

What’s up in your life?

Have a great weekend!

Thoughts 8.1

each other

Wow, how long has it been since I put a Thoughts post up?! I love writing these; it is a bit like writing an internet version of a diary (you know, since people are totes obsessed with what is happing in my life lol) but I forget about them/ have other things planned/ are lazy/ thoughts too inappropriate for the internet.

I am currently reading Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris. This is the fourth book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries series and I have to say I am still having way too much fun with this. It is exactly the right type of book to read if you don’t want to break your brain. I am also reading Nora Roberts’ latest book, The Collector. Reading a new book by your favourite author is like holding a puppy, the pleasure is astronomical. So far, so good!

Series wise, I am watching Vampire Diaries Season 3. I watched it a while back, so the story is actually quite fresh – I remember only the major plot lines so the smaller plot lines are fun to follow. I am still on a Sherlock hangover, and I don’t think it will pass over soon. I reviewed season one here and two here, and the third should be going up sometime next week. I still need to put up my thoughts on the Mentalist Season 6, which will happen sometime in the next 50 years or so J

As for movies, I finally watched Frozen last week and it was so darn cute. I completely get the fan-base for the movie, and it is now one of the few animations I will watch again.

My Studies is going well – I have practicals for two weeks in September, and I am rather nervous about it. Chemistry is definitely one of the trickiest subjects I have and one in which I have the least experience. I have to start studying as well – I sincerely don’t want to stress myself out come October/November!

Random thoughts:

This one girl keeps calling me Natasher. I have no idea how to tell her there is no ā€œerā€ to the end of my name. Sad, sad sigh. But, she also spells ā€œMaternalā€, ā€œMartenalā€, so she obviously has some issues with the letter R.

Why can’t people find solutions to their own problems before running to me? Really, do I look like I know everything? I do know a lot, but you have the answers for the questions you ask!

I actually broke my phone cover, and now I am living on the wild side until I get the chance to buy one again. I obviously need one, because really, who breaks a phone cover?

I am working on something rather exciting to replace my 5 Things Friday posts. 5 things was awesome and great fun, but it is feeling stale these days. Will let you know when it is more structured.

What is happening in your life lately? Tell me!

Thoughts 6.1: June

So, wow, it is June. As per usual the year is flying. I read once years go quicker when you are older because you have more time behind you. For a young child the year takes ages simply because its ratio is so much larger than the ratio older people have to the 365 days.Ā (Totally random, but forgive me – my brain is fried)

I have to say this year has been a mixture of good and bad so far, with plenty of learning curves thrown in. Work and life has been challenging, but definitely worth it. I have achieved most of my new year’s resolutions, so GO ME GO.

By the way, thanks for all the reblogging of Friday’s Quote For the Week! I truly appreciate itĀ šŸ™‚ This site, this siteĀ  and this siteĀ  all were kind enough, so go take a look, maybe you will love them too!

Rob’s Genre Grandeur for June is such a cool topic – Comic Book movies. You might have noticed in the past I have an affection for Comic Book Movies, so I am really excited. Go have a looky!

This is a bit further down the road (it starts in July), but Eric of the infamously cool IPC blog is hosting his Shitfest again. Everyone has seen a shitty movie (there are so many), so go take a look and see what is cracking over there. And check out my awesome Best Friend In The Universe, Zoe, did on Eric’s blog last week.

UnisaĀ Ā

I will write my last exam for the first semester on the 3rd of June. YAY! I have good hopes so far that I will pass everything. The second semester will mean some very difficult shizz for me, but I hope to actually stick to my schedule and manage it all. I will someday post a post about what it means to be a part time student, because it is so challenging and I think so many people can relate.

Movies and Books, Series

This week The Fault in Our Stars is opening in cinema. I have anxiously waited for this movie since reading the book by John Green, which is one of the most amazing and beautiful books I have ever read.

Speaking of books, I am once again attempting Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert. I have read some pages sporadically, only to be side-tracked by other material. The worst is this book is actually good and an excellent successor to Eat Pray Love, but I just keep stalling and stalling. Do you have any book that you can never finish?

Game of Thrones

I am hoping to post the review of season two up within the next few weeks. Season one’s review is here and I can say that season two was just as entertaining and shocking as the first season. I can’t believe I stalled so long in watching this. It is AMAZING and I do still not trust ANYONE because so many deaths have been spoiled for me.

The Mentalist season six has some truly heart stopping moments in. I had a very true Eomer moment in here with one of my favourite characters and nearly started smashing things around. #emotional

Eomer_crying

I saw That Awkward Moment and Springbreakers recently. TAM was not good at all, but at least had some saving graces and a few fun moments. Springbreakers, however, will now forever be remembered as one of the shittiest pieces of shit I have ever watched. IT WAS SO BAD. WTF man. WTF. You can expect a scathing review on it soon.

To round off this completely random post, here isĀ something funny:

sarcastises

Have a good Monday šŸ™‚

PS: I lost the source to the pic above while writing, so if it belongs to you, please let me know and I will link it back!

Thoughts 5.1

It’s been a while since I’ve entertained you with one of these, so I thought I would share some insights to what is running around in my head.

Firstly, I have to mention that I finally have my laptop back. After a week and a half of ownership, its’ hard drive broke and to say that I was distraught is a severe understatement. HOWEVER, I took it back to the shop where I bought it and they were beyond amazing. CNA was beyond amazing fixing it for me. It took slightly less than the three weeks I was expecting so I am super impressed about that too. WHOOP!

Some blog changes

I’ve finally, with some help of a really good friend, brought some proper search categories and tabs onto my blog. They are currently running only this year’s posts as it takes some time getting them all up but I will be building backwards into 2013. I don’t think 2012’s posts were all that good (I only started this baby then) but will place a few select ones from back then too. Tell me what you think of it!

Elections 2014

The only way South-Africans can change our corrupt government is by voting a new party in or at least scaring the ANC enough so that they start doing their jobs. Voting day is TODAY. It usually takes me all of five minutes each year to go vote and everyone else says it is really easy for them too. Meaning: JUST GO DO IT. I had a long conversation with the ever helpful tech at CNA about voting and I think I convinced him to go make a mark. I can’t obviously reach all Saffa’s, but if you read this, claim your democratic right and go make your crosses!

This guy on the bus back from Nelspruit

I could write BOOKS on how not to behave on a bus sitting next to a stranger based solely on my experience sitting next to him. So here is a fairly short list of the things he did most wrong:

  1. When someone is staring out of the window to the beautiful scenery and has their headphones in, it is a certain sign that that someone wishes to be left in peace.
  2. Don’t freak people out by asking six times where they live. Really, once is enough and when a general description is given you should leave it at that and not carry on and ask ā€œSo where exactly do you live?ā€ six times with a leering smile.
  3. Personal space. I could go on for weeks about personal space and its’ diameters and how it should be respected. I really dislike strange people in my personal space. I actually just like people I know well really close to me (I don’t think that is too odd) and if strange guy that keeps on asking me where I exactly live brushes my arm ever so often I am going to get pissed.
  4. Stop staring at my phone screen, you creep.

Series I am planning to watch in the following months:

I finished Bones Season 6 last night. It was quite good but those last few episodes wrecked havoc on my stress nerves and it was emotions flying everywhere. I have to say that I am impressed with the steady pace the series manages to run – I haven’t found one season apart from season two that I found bad.

Game of Thrones (I haven’t even seen season one yet)

Breaking Bad. Everyone is telling me to go watch this.

True Detective. Also, once again, everyone is recommending.

Suits season 4

Pretty Little Liars (I am not even sure on what season they are)

Criminal Minds, from season one.

New girl from season two onwards.

Unisa:

Ā I am writing on the 20th and 28th of May and then the 3rd of June with my other subject being a portfolio. Naturally I am writing Chemistry first. I am slightly sad that I am taking only two subjects in the second semester – I need to pass them before I can take any related practical so I am blocked right now. I just want my degree!

Books

I am finally reading again. I’m busy with the Deathly Hallows and Nora Roberts’ Tribute as well as A Faint Cold Fear by Karin Slaughter. I want to try John Green again. I enjoyed the Fault in Our Stars very much and am excited to find out if any of his other books comes close to it.

Medical Aid

They are all screwing with you, FYI.

5 Things Friday: Five things that makes me happy right now

BonesSumWhole

I’ve had an awful week at work, and I had a number of ideas for this post today: things that makes South-Africa awesome (I will only post that though once I am not so angry anymore that they stole a work colleague’s car from a secured parking lot and I am walking outside every two hours to check on my car… I guess that means good exercise at least), I had some fitness and weight loss ideas running around in my head but I didn’t even have the urge to share my limited knowledge on that subject. So I’ve decided to share with you the things that make me happy right now.

Bones season 1

It is so much fun watching a glamorised version of what I do every day. I love the characters and although the story is weak in the beginning it is definitely becoming more solid and the acting is getting better and better. And the lab is AWESOME. I want it I want it now.

The Fact that I am watching Captain America: Winter Soldier tonight

Captain America
Finally!! Of all the Marvel movies, Captain America has the best story. I really can’t wait! Watch out for the review next week!

The fact that I am watching Divergent next weekend

Divergent
This is obviously movie month here, but I can’t wait to see Tris, Four and the Dauntless. WHOOP

I am seeing my best friend at the end of April!
ZOE!!!!!

I got 100% for my Microbiology assignment at Unisa.
#HappyLabRat

Enjoy your weekend!

Thoughts 3.1

I feel as if it has been ages since I wrote one of these. February flew past me with the rush to complete my book challenge, getting bogus assignments submitted (I still fully maintain that it is bogus because I simply don’t agree with the way the subject in question is compiled) and focusing on not eating a ton of nonsense (I failed spectacularly). So here goes:

Unisa

March is usually the beginning of most assignment submissions for Unisa. That means sitting my butt down and working (on real assignments)

It’s done

That is, the book challenge. I’ve been posting books throughout the year. I am likely to continue (I really do read a lot) but I’m going to reread tons as well and won’t be posting those again. I actually can’t wait to reread all my favorites.

New direction

I don’t think I will be posting specific challenges, though obviously I am not ruling it out. I think my only goal this year will be new things. New books, new music, new places, new movies, new experiences.

Upgrade

THANK FREAKING HEAVENS I AM NEARLY UPGRADING. This blackberry is driving me NUTS. IF I EVER EVEN ATTEMPT TO THINK ABOUT BUYING SUCH SHIT AGAIN BIND ME TO A CHAIR. PLEASE.

Weight, diets, exercise and exhaustion with my brain

Apparently, thinking constantly is part of my personality and star sign. It is true – I cannot stop my brain from incessantly thinking and frustrating me senseless. I just want a switch at night – can I possibly stop all these thoughts running havoc in my head?!

I am exhausted by the constant pressure of eating correctly and exercising. So I’ve essentially given up. I try to eat as healthy as possible, but I am starting to send thoughts to my brain dictating that I am not allowed to be mad at myself anymore if I fail. It is a constant process.

The Oscar Pistorius case

It really feels that everything South-Africans are proud of gets taken away. Look, we have a disabled athlete competing in the Olympics. Oh look, he shoots his girlfriend four times through a closed door on Valentine’s Day.

My opinion: It is a loss. Two beautiful, talented people. One is dead and the other one is on trial. There is no proper justice because nothing is bringing Reeva Steenkamp back. Is he guilty? I don’t think he was planning to shoot her. Is it possible he completely lost his temper and went after her? That is another question completely.

My opinion on the journalists in South-Africa: You suck. You are like a bunch of hungry dogs with a bone and have no respect or decency anymore. There is this one particular journo that is irritating me incredibly – I am not naming him – but he isn’t even remotely unbiased in anything. I am barely reading news or going on Twitter because everything is just being blown out of proportion these days.

Speaking of which

As I hope you know, South-Africa has one of the most successful youngest democracies in the world. Unfortunately though, our political parties are mainly jokes just like any other countries’. The leading party and the leading opposition (that isn’t difficult to figure out) are being complete and utter fools these days. Just grow the fuck up, please.

Movies

I’ve finally seen 500 Days of Summer (depressing) and Safe Haven (relatively good and a decent adaption of the book). I also re-watched Sleeping Beauty (the classic) and it is as awesome as my childhood memories dictate.

This one delivery guy at work

Smells like weed all the time. Honestly, who smokes weed while transporting medical samples?!

Excited about

CA winter soldier

The new Captain America movie coming out. Can’t wait!

A bit disappointed

That Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t get his Oscar. Sigh L

The most irritating thing of all time:

Girls playing the I’m a wilting flower routine. How can anyone find this attractive? I want to slap people so hard that does this. Fuck man.

I should stop writing since I’m using the word Fuck a lot right now.

Sorry.

Fuck
